QUAD BIKES MAINTENANCE
|
Always check your ATV manual to decipher what needs to be lubricated, adjusted or checked for wear.
There's a lot more to it than that though, so read on! |
Radiator and Water Pump
Some ATVs that are liquid cooled require additional maintenance. The cooling system aids in heat distribution ensuring that the engine is running at a tolerable heat rate and this system must be looked after.
It is important to ensure that the radiator is full with radiator fluid as low fluid levels may cause the engine to overheat. The hose should be regularly check for cracks, holes or leaks and replaced if required.
Keep an eye out for fluid coming from the top of the engine head or from the water pump area as you may have a defected gasket, which will need replacing.
Your radiator should be cleaned every few months as bugs, leaves, etc may build up and should be removed.
If your engine appears to be overheating but everything else seems to be in working order, you may have a damaged water pump. The antifreeze may not be circulating which will be indicated if the pump is not spinning.
CAUTION: never remove the radiator cap when the engine has been running as pressure and heat may build up causing anti-freeze to potentially spray causing burns.

Cables
•The brakes and clutch are operated by cables, which must be carefully maintained and checked for damage frequently
Scratched or torn cables are prone to letting moisture, which can potentially cause the cable to seize due to rust. Damaged cables should be replaced ASAP.
Never rely on just your front or back brakes, ensure that both are in good working order
Cables should be well lubricated with approved grease before every use.
Levers
The levers attaching the cables are just as important to maintain. Your brakes, clutch, gas and choke levers should be well lubricated with approved grease.
If levers are allowed to dry out or become to congested with dirty, they may bind up, resulting in a heavy repair bill.
Switches
Many of the latest ATVs manufactured are equipped with several switches and gauges such as lights, motor on/off, choke, motor start, etc. Although many of these are electrical
concerns and difficult to maintain, some protection can be carried out. Moisture and grime may build up underneath these switches which should be removed and cleaned every six months or so.
Switches should be cleaned with a solution, which will evaporate, and oxidation or rust should be cleaned away from electrics carefully with a wire brush or sand paper.
