The irony is that these bikes come from Europe and Japan and have been used on race circuits in Britain since the mid-Nineties.

They were never intended for street use and were pioneered by an Italian company (Blata) in the Eighties for high performance racing. One of the reasons pocket bikes are so popular are their size. The motorbike equivalent of the Chopper bicycle, these machines can often go faster in mph (40 plus) than they weigh in pounds, so you can show up at a race with your ride under your arm or carry it with you instead of parking.

One San Francisco importer estimates that more than 530,000 have been sold in the US this year, prompting one US wholesaler to comment, "they're selling like motorized crack cocaine." One UK spokesperson said "the craze has taken off tremendously in the US in the past six months and it's just starting to catch on over here."
